How we verify

Prosthetics & Orthotics Finder is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.

Sources

• NPPES NPI Registry (CMS) — The federal registry of National Provider Identifiers, published monthly by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. We use the September 2026 bulk file.
• NUCC Health Care Provider Taxonomy — The code set that defines each registered specialty.

We load every active NPI in the monthly NPPES bulk file whose primary taxonomy is Prosthetic/Orthotic Supplier (335E00000X), organizations only. Deactivated NPIs are excluded. Individual practitioners are not listed; patients book with a practice.

Registered specialty and license number are what each organization entered when registering. NPPES does not verify them, so we label them as registered or listed and link every profile to the official registry record. Always confirm a practitioner's certification and any state license yourself.

We drop organizations whose NPI record has not been updated since before 2013, because providers must update NPPES within 30 days of a change and a record untouched for over a decade usually belongs to a business that has closed or moved. Organizations with the same name, address and ZIP are merged.

Service categories come from words in the organization's name (for example prosthetics, orthotics, pedorthic). They are a convenience for browsing, not a statement of what a practice offers.

Order within a city: NPI records updated in 2024 or later first, then 2019 to 2023, then older, each alphabetical. Featured listings appear in a separate, labelled box and never change that order.

What a badge means

Registry-checked: the organization's National Provider Identifier (NPI) is active in the September 2026 NPPES file published by CMS. Each listing shows the registered specialty and any license number exactly as the organization entered them. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.

Freshness

Data was last refreshed on 2026-09-30. CMS publishes a new NPPES file every month; we re-load it monthly.
